Prosthetics Program
Prosthetics Program
Arizona PVA will maintain a prosthetics program that will ensure that all SCI/D individuals who are underserved, low income or have inadequate insurance coverage will receive immediate assistance in obtaining durable medical equipment (DME). |
The APVA Prosthetics Program was created in 1995 to ensure that all SCI/D individuals living in the state of Arizona who are underserved, low income or have inadequate insurance coverage would receive immediate assistance in obtaining durable medical equipment, (DME) which includes, but is not limited to wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, shower benches, shower chairs, crutches and standing frames as well as sports chairs. No matter what age a person with SCI/D is, without DME they become physically and psychologically depressed, due to an inability to get out and interact with others. This program strives to prevent their loss of independence.
Equipment is donated from every conceivable source, then stored in a small warehouse behind our office space, where staff members and volunteers keep inventory, refurbish and repair the DME and do pick-ups and deliveries.
This program has also been successful in making a collaborative effort with an at-risk youth group, Vested Interest, who volunteers their time in tear-down, cleaning, assembling and taking inventory of the donated DME. Through this program, the APVA provides mentors who work with at-risk youth, teaching them life skills and increasing their self-esteem.
The Arizona Technology Access
Program (AzTAP) was created in 1994 and operates under the mandate
of the Assistive Technology Act of 1998 as amended (P.L. 108-364).
AzTAP is funded by the US Department of Education, Rehabilitation
Services Administration, Grant Award # H 224A060003.
