GOVERNOR DUCEY PROCLAMS MAY 20th, 2017 AS
“NATIONAL ARMED FORCES FREEDOMRIDE” IN ARIZONA
PHOENIX – A Proclamation has been issued by the Office of the Governor, designating May 20th, 2017 as “National Armed Force FreedomRide” in Arizona. The declaration recognizes the significance of Armed Forces Day and the “National Armed Forces FreedomRide”
President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. On May 20, 1950 the first official Armed Forces Day was celebrated and has been since then on the third Saturday every year. This year will mark the first day that the NAFFR falls on the same day it was proclaimed back on May 20, 1950.
